Leadership and Qualities Essay
As a company that wants to grow, SPAR s Applied System Group (ASG) faces a few external and internal pressures urging the company to change in order to adapt to the new business environment. SPARââ¬â¢s Applied Systemsââ¬â¢ client base primarily consists of government-based agency, from Canadaââ¬â¢s Department of National Defense to U.Sââ¬â¢s Navy and Coast Guard. However due to shrinking budgets in the defense department of government-based agency, SPARs Applied Systems faces the external pressures of less sales due to lower demanded from its major clients. Along with decrease demand ASG also faces the problem of its heritage programs nearing competition, 70% of its revenues will be gone once these projects are completed. ASG also have the policy of cost plus when working on government projects, which meant if the project was delayed or went over budget ASG would have to eat the cost. Another external pressure that is forcing ASG to change is the company is technology foc us rather than customer focus, with the increasing competitions in the market ASG is ill prepare for the external pressure of growing competitiveness in their field. A major internal pressure ASG is experiencing has to do with their employees, although ASGââ¬â¢s employees are the most skilled in their field, the company itself did not know how to best direct their energy. The employees were comfortable working in their current environment, which means costs are not effectively allocated. With declining revenue it is critical for management to change the culture in order for the company to be more profitable. Along with the contract of cost plus it becomes clear that ASG needs to allocate their cost efficiently in order to generate profit. In conclusion none of this can be achieved without Stephen Miller. What Makes Stephen great leaders, when Stephen faced numerous challenges when he took on the role as the General Manager at ASG.? The problems that he faced were quite difficult to solve with a single solution, rather there were multiple alternatives. The greatest challenge we believe that he faced was that ASG was competition in a decreasing market, which was Government aviation and defense industry. Majority of the companyââ¬â¢s revenues came from government contracts that were soon to be ending. The entire government spending towards defense and space aviation was decreasing and ASG had to make the transition towards more consumer based. In regards to that single problem, Stephen faced a lot of internal and external pressures. Stephen had to change the corporate culture from focusing on being technology driven to customer based. There were two kind of leadership that we think Stephen used as the GM. First it was situational leadership because, that leadership is composed of both a directive and a supportive dimension, and each has to be applied appropriately in a given situation. He actively searched out the best and the most experienced candidates in their field of work or specialty. Stephen then would guide them with both the directive and supportive dimensions until they were truly good what they did for ASG. The second leadership was the Path goal theory, the reason I saw that is because theory is about how leaders motivate subordinates to accomplish designated goals. The reason why I say that is because, the company was moving in a new direction, and Stephen was trying to foster a new corporate culture. He was trying fostering team work, opening communication channels and acknowledging great performance from individuals. Stephen motivated his colleagues to believe in the new path that was set by first focusing on the employees. In addition Stephen was a transformation leader he used the Inspirational Motivation technique which fostered team spirit, motivation and provide meaning and challenge to his colleagues. The challenge that ASG faced, Stephen made every believe that was their personal problem. Lastly how did he overcome the team leadership problem? Well what Stephen has singular responsibility for running a custom that will help the group accomplish efficacy. Well team leadership incorporates both internal and external situations. Stephen did that be choosing which methods would benefits his company the most. One of the best decision Stephen did was hire Ana Solari, but what were her challenges. ââ¬Å"Anna Solari with an experience of 10-years, worked as Human Resources Consultant for two Different commercial high technology firmsâ⬠(Rowe, 244). She is relatively new to Spar Applied system and her new job as a director is to create ââ¬Å"departmental vision and strategy for 2000â⬠(Rowe, 241). She began her work by gathering data from a population of 341 employees and named it ââ¬Å"Baseline Auditâ⬠. She was excited with the challenge that well established company wants to focus more on commercially oriented aviation customers than government customers. The Baseline Audit introduces several challenges to Anna and these are as follow: Anna finds that ASG functional departments operates in isolation and ââ¬Å"upper management wanteda structure organized by process that functioned in integrated teams created for specific contractsâ⬠(Rowe, 245), So ASG improves its market share by providing products on time. Furthermore, Anna describes the corporate culture as ââ¬Å"When I walked into was a very traditional, hierarchical organization with four or five layers of management.â⬠(Rowe, 245) that she believe major hurdle in communication between upper management and general workers. As a result, accountability cannot be managed properly because it rests with those who possessed the ââ¬Å"managerâ⬠title. Anna was surprise to know that work place appearance was detrimental ââ¬Å"such as the color of the paint on the walls, poor ventilation, and questions about health and safety standards from workers.â⬠(Rowe, 245) she wondered how the company will eliminate the next attempt of unionization, if management couldnââ¬â¢t motivate employees. Recruitment and training is another area, where she feels ASG should look into so new ideas and performance can be improved. As she said ââ¬Å"they broke out of the mold a little bit when they hired me.â⬠(Rowe, 246) Since Applied System Group is technology base department, therefore, it prefers hiring from within because they believe experience is much better than new graduate. It also limits the involvement of Human Resource department that make sure whether the worker is fit for new role. Furthermore, if an employee needs critical training which is not available within the organization then ASG sends the worker outside to community college. This practice shows that department doesnââ¬â¢t have enough technical staff or expertise that trains employees. In regards to the new direction of ASG under Stephen Miller, what changes were needed? From our analysis, Stephen Miller determined that ASG was unable to compete in the commercial marketplace. ASG products were marketed for government and military client and failed the ability to meet the requirement of new customers. Under the direction of Stephen miller, the changes that were needed in the HR department were (1) dramatically change the ASG culture from technology driven to market driven, (2) make possible for the division to make more money for at least six months in a row, (3) Design a global long-term strategy rather than short-term strategy to help ASG to create a culture that will allow more teamwork and open communication to increase both the flexibility and performance of the organization Anna clearly best approached to lead her HR department smoothly is using the transformational change framework. It involves an entire rethinking of how the company is structured and managed, and emphasize at eliminating the poor management skills to prevent the next unionization. In such change, instead of conforming to procedures and practices, the company needs to restructure and redefines its practices and policies. Anna experienced culture at ASG was quite formal where major problem encountered in communication between upper management and general employees, equity, behavior shifts, overtime policies and sick leave, poor working condition and little face-to-face communication are the main hurdle for HR department run smoothly. Anna best approached to loosen up the company situation is by using the transformational change framework to restructure and redefines its practices and policies.

Hedgehog concept Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Hedgehog concept - Essay Example ls (family) conducted their business, the respect that they commanded, and the success that came with their leadership provoked my clandestine passion of becoming a leader at whatever capacity of the society. Later I came to discover from whatever small capacity I was given opportunity to lead, I did it diligently to an extent that I realized the passion was beyond inspiration and just in-born. The desire to excel drives my economy. I want to be in a better economic position than I hold at present through better leadership. The success that come with or will come with my good leadership skills is what drives my economical wheel. I am superb in penmanship. My genetic ability is more on authorship. I have more of article writing that have received a lot of acclaims and positive comment. I have not yet fully exploited my inborn ability. In the event that I focus on it and put more energy on it, I have a feeling that it can be best done and in a profitable way. I have focused more on my passion and given a blind eye to my in born ability that came naturally without the influence of people that surround me. Ironically, I have a feeling that Im not that good in writing since the positive comments after penning a piece of article from my friends they are the one that make me feel that I good in the world of authorship. My first step in moving forward is doing something that relates to my passion and skills. I should stop being persuaded by my passion and instead put more effort in making what I can do best in great heights. This particular step can be achieved in a number of ways. The only thing to be known on this scenario is to focus from being good to greatness. One way to achieve this goal is to concentrate on field of penmanship since it where I am good already (Collins 25). I should put concerted effort to improve my strength other than to concentrate on my passion where I am likely to be weak. It will take more energies to better my weakness where my passion is

Quality Service Management Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Quality Service Management - Case Study Example Spencer was in maintaining quality service by the hotel staff as a result of which he and his family had to wait for a long time before they could finally check in into their room. There were also unavailability of staff to escort them to their room as they had luggages and also a kid. They had to struggle to reach their room this indicates a clear service quality gap as the hotel was not being able to meet the basic requirements of their guests. The guests waited for a long time in queue due to inefficiency of the front desk operators. The hotel even did not possess an effective knowledge management which resulted into same room being allocated to two guests. There was even lack of communication between the hotel staff and guests and this caused the guests to wait for a long time for services such as availability of even room keys. The staff of the hotel also did not take to deliver appropriate services to the guest and there were no staff available to attend the guests if they came after 11pm. Remington Hotel was not able to handle queries of the customers and neither had efficient staffs who could deliver the guests standard services and even could contribute towards making the experience of their guests at their hotel a memorable one. The most important service quality dimension that needs to be considered by Madeline for further service improvement was assurance. The hotel staff and even design of the facilities that were offered to the guests was very low in assuring that they were able to meet quality standards in comparison to other hotels. Madeline needs to improve assurance factor so as to deliver high quality services to all its guests. The main factors that build this assurance aspect are well trained staff, technologically advanced system and quick services as per the requirements of their guests (Lockyer, 2013, pp. 75-76). These factors need to be handled very effectively so that the guests do not come up with such

Public Relations Assignment (Press Release) Essay
Public Relations Assignment (Press Release) - Essay Example It is not a secret that many people have more doubts about the quality and sanitarian norms of the fast food served rather than its impact upon health. It is a well-known fact that fast food contains increased amount of sugar and fat and hence not healthy, yet some people still make a choice to eat in ââ¬Å"Carnivore Joeââ¬â¢sâ⬠ââ¬â so itââ¬â¢s better to ensure them that the freshness and sanitarian norms of their food are more than satisfactory. Paying particular attention to managing and training our employees should be crucial for building up the image of a good employer. Apart from that, wages should be competitive, and staff should be taught and encouraged to get promoted within the company. I would also suggest our companyââ¬â¢s participation in the social life of our community. For example, we might support charity projects, organize our own ââ¬Å"green-marketingâ⬠projects that in a way compensate for our contribution into ââ¬Å"spoilingâ⬠the nationââ¬â¢s health (good ideas would be ecologically-directed projects like planting trees, saving wildlife and others). We might also start using recycled cups and plates, recycled paper for wrapping burgers, etc. We must emphasize our use of environmentally safe products when preparing our dishes, and our aiming not to pollute the environment. Perhaps we should also pay more attention to specifying the fat and carbohydrates content for each product sold by us. If permitted we should also aim at selling some low-fat and low-carbohydrate food, and maybe even encourage customers buy more of this type of food and drinks. I would definitely also work on visual layout and design of the restaurants. I would study the tastes and preferences of the target audience and go for something very creative and making us stand out from the crowd in design ââ¬â this might be either the interior evoking associations with home or, vice versa, something extremely innovative ââ¬â perhaps even

Input and output devices Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Input and output devices - Essay Example Devices that serve as both input device and output device are termed as I/O devices. An example of input device is a keyboard. Using the keypad, a user types the data. A keyboard sends electrical signals to the computer system, which is essentially the input. The computer then interprets the signals so that the results can be displayed in the form of text on a monitor. In this example, the text is output. In an another example, a computer sends data to a printer and it generates a printed paper. Here, computer is the input device whereas printer is the output device. The input and output may vary in their nature and form depending upon the mechanism. For example, when a computer sends information into a printer as signals, the input is digitized information whereas its output is a tangible printed paper. It is important to note that an input device e.g. a mouse or the keyboard of a computer can perform the function of sending information to a computer as input. However, these input devices cannot reproduce or receive any information from the computer as output. It is also noteworthy that the input or output classification of devices is relative to each other. This can be elaborated from the example of a USB inserted in the port of a computer and a lead connecting the computer to a printer. Here, while the computer serves as an output device for the USB in that it generates the signals, the computer plays the role of an input device for the printer because eventually, the text will be printed as output by the printer. A USB flash drive and a CD-RW drive are both examples of I/O devices as both can send as well as receive information from a computer. To conclude, input devices send information into a system whereas output devices generate its results. Some devices can only be either input devices or output devices whereas others can be both. The status of a device as an input device or an output

File management in UNIX Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
File management in UNIX - Essay Example The owner, therefore, is the only person who can change the protection system of that particular file. However, other individuals often referred to as members, can also access that particular file if only they belong to that particular group. These members can, therefore, see each otherââ¬â¢s file in the system. Groups are generally created for users of a common front, for example, a group can be created for staff members of a particular organization. In order to determine the owner of a particular file, the command ââ¬ËIs-I filenameââ¬â¢ is typed. This gives the information about the owner and the particular details of the file. These details include; From the above, we can denote that the file is contained in a directory hence the first'sââ¬â¢. The owner of the file has the permission to read, write and execute the file or group hence ââ¬Ërwx. The group members, which in this case are the 4990 users, have the permission to only read and write hence the commands ââ¬Ër-wââ¬â¢. Lastly, the other users, presumably the remaining 10 users, have no permissions or access to the folder, hence the command ââ¬Ë---ââ¬Ë. It also important to note that to change the permission of the file, the command ââ¬Ëchmodââ¬â¢, meaning ââ¬Ëchange modeââ¬â¢ is followed (Jaeger & T., 2008). This can only be used by the owner of the file or group and is used together with the commands ââ¬Ëijkââ¬â¢; ââ¬Ëiââ¬â¢ represents for the user's permission, ââ¬Ëjââ¬â¢ represents the groupsââ¬â¢ permission, while ââ¬Ëkââ¬â¢ represents the other user's permission. This can be illustrated as such; chmodijkà file(s)
